29. George [11] Morton 15 (George of Bawtry 14, 33) (CORR-EPD/HAD, 25 Apr 1938)

 

George Morton was a merchant in York, England in 1612, in which year he became a member of the Leyden, Holland congregation of John Robinson and married Juliana Carpenter. He joined the Pilgrim colony in Leyden and 'Later went to London where he was one of the prime movers in securing backing for the Pilgrims sailing to the New World. He and his family embarked in the "Speedwell" of 1620, but were forced to turn back when that ship had troubles. The Morton family finally sailed on the ship "Anne" arriving at Plymouth in June 1623.

He was the author of "Mort's Relations," a well-known volume. After his death, his wife married Manassa Kempton and she died at Plymouth on 19 February 1665. She was a sister of Governor Bradford's wife Alice (Carpenter) Southworth; for that reason several of her children were brought up in Governor Bradford's family. ). He married (PC, P329-330) Juliana Carpenter (30), 23 Jul 1612, in Leyden, Holland. Children:

 

i. Nathaniel "Secretary" [10] (PC, P330; CORR-EPD/HAD, 25 Apr 1938) (Secretary Nathaniel Morton, born at Leyden, November 1613, immigrated to Plymouth with his parents in 1623. Following the death of his father, as a boy of 11 years he was taken, with other siblings, into the home of his uncle, Governor William Bradford where he grew up. He became a Freeman on 3 January 1637, a grand juryman in 1639 and again in 1646. The following year he became "Secretary" (which was later changed to "Clerk") of the Plymouth General Court, a position he held until his death. His famous "New Englands Memoriall" was written in 1669, much of which was based on his uncle William's notes. This was followed in 1680 by "A Briefe Eclesiastall History of the Church of Christ at Plimouth, Anno Domi 1680."

His will was written 22 April 1685 and the inventory of his estate in July, the same year. ). Born, 13 Nov 1613, in Leyden, Holland. Died, 28 Jun 1685, in Plymouth, MA. Occupation: Sec'y, Plymouth. He married (PC, P330), first, Lydia Cooper (MSR, P548)

Lydia was the sister of John Cooper of Scituate and Barnstable. John married Priscilla (Carpenter) Wright, who was Secretary Nathaniel's aunt. ), 25 Dec 1635, in Plymouth, MA.
