Thank you to all who helped make our May 2005 booksale another success.

Joan Day, President of the Friends, and Fran Mino, Chairman of the Booksale, take a few seconds off from their preparations to pose for a photo...while Loretta Sliwinski psyches herself up for her shift.

The crowd shows great patience waiting for the opening of the May 2005 Preview Night.

On August 14, the Dunham Public Library held a ribbon cutting ceremony to present the new landscaping project paid for with funds raised by the Friends of the Dunham Public Library.

Here are some preparation photos:

Voila!

In addition to our large booksales held in May and October of each year, the library has also been conducting an in-house booksale on a monthly basis. This continues to be a worthwhile project. The in-house booksale figures for January 2006 were over $300.00.

The ongoing booksale continues to do exceptionally well due to the hard work of Louise Sheehan and Carol Ann Tanner. They always need books. Right now, children's books. We all thank them for all the hours they spend and their dedication.

At the end of May 2005, Friends membership stands at 318 members.

Donations of: used books (hardcovers & paperbacks), records, music, CDs, software, videos, DVDs, cassettes, brown paper bags...will be gratefully accepted year round the Dunham Public Library

Purpose of the Friends of the Dunham Public Library

The Friends of the Dunham Public Library is a not for profit organization consisting of civic minded men and women who are aware that a community is a better place to live if it has a first rate library. Dunham Public Library is definitely first rate.

*Our library touches the lives of pre-schoolers to senior citizens. From those who are just learning to read to people who need highly technical information.

*The Friends of the library volunteer their time and talents to promote, improve and expand library services. The Friends are able to accomplish this through their May and October book sales.

Friends Donations

The October 2005 booksale generated $5,038.28. The Friends donated $2138.00 to the library for: two office chairs, a pedestal sign, repair to a brick pillar, a World Book series for children on nature and animals, plus $5000.00 for new computer equipment.

Donations to the Dunham Public Library from the May 2006 booksale include the following:

Three bricks for the childrens summer reading program

A wooden table

Two office chairs

A book display system

A donation of $4000.00 was made to The Friends of the Library in Jefferson Parish to replace books destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

Donations made to the library after the October 2007 booksale include:

Funds for three new computers for the library

A table for the financial office

A donation to the Utica Zoo for helping to fund a Red Panda's adoption. The Children's Librarian, Sandra Scofield, had a special reading program for the children to earn coins when they read so many books. They reached the goal very quickly.

Special thanks to Fran Mino, who always finds the time to take the remaining books to the Lutheran Home, Kirkland Book Sale and St Luke's Hospital.

Adopt a Library

Last Spring, the Friends sent a donation to libraries in Sri Lanka. This year, there was a disaster closer to home in Louisiana. Our library director, Frank McBride, has been in touch with the library system there and received information about the extent of damage to the libraries in the area. Only seven of the fifteen libraries in Jefferson Parish are open. At the pre-booksale meeting on March 30, 2006, the Friends voted to adopt the Wagner Branch, which lost a large portion of their reference books and juvenile fiction. We will be sending a percentage of our May booksale receipts to our adopted library, which is expected to reopen this summer.
