"Think Purple"

On Saturday, October 20, 2007, the Dunham Public Library observed the birthday anniversary of cartoonist/childrens book illustrator, David Johnson Leisk...better known by his pen name of Crockett Johnson.

Mr. Johnson is the creator of the Barnaby comic strip and the popular Harold series of books for children, including "Harold and the Purple Crayon".

On October 20, children were invited to draw a picture with a purple crayon, choose a purple book and they took home a purple balloon.

The Erie Canal Memorial Park Brick Project

The Dunham Public Library is proud to announce that the children of the 2006 Summer Reading Club have achieved their goal of reading at least 1050 hours, to earn $105 to buy three bricks for the Erie Canal Memorial Park Brick Project.

The Friends of the Dunham Library very generously agreed to fund this project by donating ten cents for every hour that the children read. The children watched their efforts grow by depositing a "gold coin" worth ten cents into the Treasure Jar that we are presenting to the Whitesboro Historical Society on Tuesday, September 12, 2006, along with a check for $105.

The children actually read 1306 hours, 256 hours more than their goal. The library is proud of them and so pleased that their reading efforts made a contribution to the community.

Sincerely,

Youth Services Librarian: Sandy Scofield

Youth Services Assistant: Sharon Trodler

Library Director: Frank McBride
